“What’d I miss?!”

As some of the eagle-eyed amongst you may have realised, the title of one of the songs from the musical “Hamilton”, which recently I have become absolutely OBSESSED with. I can wrap “Guns and Ships” almost perfectly and know near enough 70% of the words to the rest of the musical. However, some of you may also have noticed I haven’t blogged since November…last year…. I could make lots of excuses but the main reason has been that work in year 2 is a whole step up from that in year 1. The course this year contains a number of group projects so you can see why I have been slightly stressed and away! So in case, you were asking me….”What’d I miss?!” I thought I would share a few photos and things that I have been up to since November last year!

In November I turned 20… I was very thankful to have a very long birthday as I celebrated with my family and friends. For my party, I wanted to unleash my inner child so we headed to Playzone in Hilsea which was amazing!  We got the train and then walked which was a lot cheaper and a lot easier than getting a taxi and I would highly encourage it if you want to go but are a little low on money! I also managed to beat my nerves and go down the red slide, which was very scary but I would definitely do it again!

The lead up to Christmas was slightly mad, to say the least, but was probably the most enjoyable time so far! I was lucky enough to present the “Bingo” section at the Annual Members Meeting with Andy, the science faculty rep! It was good fun and I loved my time on the stage!

Every weekend in December I disappeared back home to present “Radio Christmas”, a charity radio station that raises money for “Street Kids Direct Uk”. It was great to be back on the radio every weekend for two hours on my show that I named, “Tinsel and Tunes!”. The radio station was created in somebody’s house which was a very new to me  but an amazing experience  nonetheless and I want to thank everyone at Radio Christmas for their support and feedback!

When I left University for Christmas and finally settled at home, the run-up to Christmas seemed longer than usual, but maybe the 5-year-old in me was still too excited!! I could write a whole blog post about the run up to Christmas and the days themselves but what I can say is that they were amazing and I was very lucky and grateful! I was so excited to see all my family, some who I do not get to see that regularly at all so was great to catch up with them. Below is a photo from Olympia the international horse show. Being a horse rider myself this always gives me so much enthusiasm and inspiration for the sport.

This year I am aiming to get fitter and healthier and beat my time in the Great South Run from last year and jump more confidently and higher on horses.

I will try and get back into a routine with this blogging businesses but until next time…

Remember remember the 5th November…

Remember remember, the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot,

I see no reason why Gunpowder, treason,

Should ever be forgot. 

 

Bonfire night. Guy Fawkes night. Fireworks night. Bonfires are lit and fireworks are sent into the sky creating beautiful displays for all to see. This year I came home for fireworks night to go and see my local fireworks display. With a few lot of layers on we braved the cold and went to see the display.

The field, when we arrived, was already absolutely packed. Luckily it was on a hill so we headed to the very top to get the best view, (also helped as I am quite small..)  The fireworks were a little late but eventually the countdown began and the first firework raced into the sky. The fireworks display is set to music but you couldn’t really hear it over the fireworks.

The finale was crazy there were so many fireworks being let off at once you didn’t really know where to look!

I do not think the photos quite showed how amazing the last seconds were so I will post the video. (Sorry for the camera movement but as you can see there was just SO much going on!!)

Bonfire night also marks a week till my birthday, which I am very excited about!! The next time I write on my student blog I will be 20…..oh goodness….I may do a special extra blog post next week but we will have to see how much work I have to do! I am hoping to have none on my birthday!!

The Great South Run

Apologies for not blogging last week, I had a mad mad day and then decided just to take the week off.

So last week I COMPLETED, yes I COMPLETED  the Great South Run all in aid of Anthony Nolan. I even got the medal to prove it!! I have to admit I walked most of the course but I am still really proud that I did it! The course was great fun, a great way to see Portsmouth in a very short amount of time.

As we  headed to the start line I felt sick with nerves. I had trained…well maybe not as much as I had wanted so decided to walk the course. As I set off, with the Hamilton soundtrack playing in my ears, the sun beaming down on me and the klaxon flaring, I knew it was time. I was not turning back now.

After attempting *attempting* to jog some of the course I noticed another walker and so decided to try and catch up with her. She ended up being my course buddy and she helped me get through the course in 2 hours 53 minutes.

I started off hopeful and full of energy, I didn’t even mind that a whole sea of runners overtook me! The first mile, I felt electric and then the second and third came in a flash. Being given access to the dockyards was amazing! I think it was the highlight of the course!

2 miles down….8 to go….

What I didn’t realise is that the energy would soon slow and I would start to feel like it was no good. There was no way I could finish this run.  As we walked past the place I am living, part of me yearned to go back. It was about midday by this point and the Great Run App (which, I highly recommend by the way…) was telling me I would be finished at 1:45pm. This just felt like ages away and with runners who were finished walking back I decided to fight it and carry on. I had to stop thinking about the time and the miles I had done and those I had left to do and just carry on and enjoy the course and the weather!

As we reached the first water point I was so thankful to get some fluid in me, I was slightly worried about getting ill as the sun was really hot and I had not had water since a couple of hours before. I sipped it slowly and carried on. I had to carry on.

WOAHHHH…WE’RE HALFWAY THEREEEE!

Getting to the halfway point was tiring, but gave me a huge confidence boost at the same time. By now it was about 12:30 so I knew I had roughly an hour and a half left. My knees were starting to hurt, my legs were aching and I was close to giving up. Thinking about all the runners that had finished was hard. I wanted that to be me. So? I carried on.

All the supporters at the side of the road were lovely, getting hi-5’s, and words of encouragement from strangers really boosted me on. People who had never met me were willing me on to do this. If they thought I could do it…then I could!  It was all about having a positive attitude and quickly getting myself out of any negative thoughts. I was going to finish this!

The next three miles were a blur…I think they were the hardest three miles as I just wanted to be finished and I knew I still had a while left. (Actually, I lie….mile 8-9 was hardest!!) I can’t really remember much of miles 5-8 apart from the fact that we were given Lucozade at mile 7 and it tasted great and gave me a much-needed energy boost and that the course went around Eastney. We walked past a pub with people standing outside having a pint and I said “drink one for me…”

I had synced the Great Run App with Facebook so it would post updates on my page for me and the support I had on my Facebook page was again…just amazing! Thank you to everyone that was messaging me and liking the posts. It felt like you were all there with me.

Mile 8…. 2 miles to go….

Mile 8-9 was probably the worst. My knees were now in a considerable amount of pain and I just wanted to throw the towel in. I knew I could do it, but the last three miles definitely felt slower than the first three. I knew I had slowed down as well and was just trying to find energy from somewhere. My aim was to cross the finish by the time the Hamilton soundtrack (which was 2hrs 30 mins) had finished.. as I got closer and closer to the end of the soundtrack I lost confidence…the time I was due to be finished had gone up to 2pm and every step I took hurt!

9 miles gave me a great surge of confidence and energy (and no..that wasn’t just the jelly babies that I could have eaten about 10,000 more of!) I was so close. I couldn’t believe that I had almost finished and was getting more and more emotional about it! I pushed through the pain.

800m, 400m, 200m…..the markers counted down the metres left and as I got close to the finish I jogged to the end. I HAD DONE IT!! I could not quite believe it and even as I type this I still cannot believe it! It was an amazing day and I want to say thank you to the event organisers, Anthony Nolan and all my friends and family for supporting me through a tough 10-mile course. As I got in the Uber I ached (yes I got an Uber home I was not walking another 15 minutes, especially as I had walked down there!) I looked at my phone at my steps and was astounded!!

18.1km!! I could never think about walking that many steps..let alone doing it!!

Overall it was a great experience and I was so glad to cross the line, receive my medal and raise a fantastic amount of money for charity. As I got in the shower I felt so warm and proud. I was so proud of myself for completing it and not giving up. And guess what?! I want to do it all over again next year!

How to make crepes!

First of all, sorry this is a day late….it’s been a hectic week!

This week I am going to show you how to make crepes I used a recipe from Allrecipes.com which was in American measurements so I  put them into English measurements!

You will need:

  • 340g of flour
  • 170g of Milk
  • 170g Water
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of butter, melted
  • Pinch of salt

Utensils:

  • Mixing bowel
  • Whisk
  • Pan/ Crepe Maker
  • Ladle
  • Spatula
  • Toppings (e.g: Lemon & Sugar, chocolate&bananas)

Recipe

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the flour and the eggs. Add in the milk and water and whisk to combine. Add the salt and butter and whisk again.
  2. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan and ladle in a scoop of the mixture into the pan and immediately tilt the pan in a circular motion to create a perfect circle. (Or use a Crepe maker like I did!)
  3. Cook the crepe until there are small bubbles in the top of the crepe and then carefully slide the spatula under the crepe and flip it over. Cook until brown.
  4. Add toppings, roll and eat!

The first few weeks at uni…

The first few weeks being a second year have not been as bad as I thought they would be. Having been in Portsmouth since the 8th September I am slightly relieved that everything is starting back now. The city is a buzz and Portsmouth is not so much of a “ghost town” that it was a month ago.

It is almost strange being a second year, I know where everything is and I know what to expect from lectures but maybe most importantly, this year counts towards my degree!

The first weeks of lectures have not been as bad as I anticipated, rather than chucking everything at us, they have eased us in and made me feel a lot better about second year (which I have been told is a big step up from first….but so far….so good….)

I am excited for what the year holds, Faculty Rep for CCI and on RAG committee are both exciting roles and I am thoroughly enjoying both of them. I have rejoined societies such as horse riding, tap and even have a show on Purefm again! As well as all these societies and roles I have also decided to do the “Great South Run” as part of my fundraising for Anthony Nolan. The Great South Run is a 10 mile run around Southsea and having watched all the  runners run past my halls last year I am excited to be one of them and hope to complete the run in a good time!  Massive thanks to Anthony Nolan who have given me so much support for this event and for sending me a running vest!

Easy Carbonara!

Hello, and welcome back to my blog!

Today I am going to be showing you possibly the easiest way to make carbonara. You only need three ingredients and it is quick and easy to make! Also a good way to use up bacon if you have any left over.

You will need:

  • Bacon (4 rashers)
  • Pasta (normally I cover the bottom of the pan)
  • Two squares of cheese
  • Salt (to taste)

Utensils:

  • Frying pan
  • Saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Kettle
  • Chopping board
  • Knife

Recipe

  1. In a saucepan add the pasta and a pinch of salt. Boil some water in a kettle and add to the saucepan. Boil to packet instructions.
  2. In the frying pan fry the bacon until it is just brown. When it is cooked place on a chopping board and cut into small slices.
  3. When the pasta is cooked, drain the water and place the pasta back into the pan. a
  4. Add the slices of cheese and stir until they are melted. Place in a serving bowl and stir in bacon. Season with pepper to taste.

Tips!

  • You do not need to add salt at the end to season as there is already some in the bacon.
  • If you do not want to use/ do not have any bacon you can always use ham instead!
  • If you boil the water for the pasta in a kettle and then add it to the pan the pasta will cook faster as the water will heat up quicker.

The start of the second year…

Tomorrow is the beginning. The beginning of my second year at the University of Portsmouth. Nervous? Yes! Scared? Maybe. Ready to take on year two? Of course! It is very weird being a second year, seeing the new students remembering you were one of them last year. The city is a buzz and you can definitely tell everyone is back!

Lectures start tomorrow and with new buildings to tackle, new units to study for and new lecturers to stand before me  I am ready to tackle everything that year 2 throws at me. I am excited to be CCI Faculty representative, to be on committees and to be part of clubs I was a part of last year.

Last week was induction week and as part of Fresher’s Fayre, I dressed up as “Ralphie the Rag bear” and went round giving hugs, being in photos and having fun! It was so much fun but I was very very smelly by the end of it! The outfit was also far too big for me and ended up having to hoist it up every 5 seconds!
